The KVC was incorporated in 1972 and remains today, one of the oldest and longest established, continually operational Visitor Centres in WA. Since 1972 the KVC has evolved and changed as the demands for tourism in the region have intensified. The Visitor Centre holds Level 1 Accreditation, is licensed with the Travel Compensation Fund and is a member of Australia's North West, the Visitor Centre Association of WA, WA Tourism Network and plays a significant role within the local community with representation on variousCommittee's/Board's. To complement our very high standards of operation, the VC sells an array of generic merchandise, offers a comprehensive website, has a good selection of locally produced items and is also in the enviable position of having professionally managed member products on offer throughout the East Kimberley.
The Kununurra Visitor Centre (KVC) is the first point of contact for many of the 98,000 visitors to our region, including those visitors seeking information on its Northern Territory neighbour. The KVC prides itself on delivering professional up-to-date information and advice, as well as being one of the most pro-active Visitor Centres within the region, state and nationally.
The KVC promotes a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, where people can speak to one of its knowledgeable tourism consultants seven days per week (seasonally) about their queries, as well as providing the following services, facilities and general contribution to the tourism experience in our region:
Services
Visitors to our region are often complimentary about the KVC's service and knowledge of its staff. The KVC provides a relaxed environment where visitors can browse our local, regional, state and NT brochures, offer a professional booking service for tours and accommodation by industry trained professional staff that are not only knowledgeable on the products but have experienced a vast majority of them themselves and also produce our own, very popular, FREE Glove Box Guide to the East Kimberley (40,000 copies annually) that contains local and regional information, mud maps and town maps. Staff at the KVC are long-term employees - the shortest serving employee has been with the KVC for 3 seasons and the longest serving is in her 14th season - visitors love talking to a ‘local'. So that we are always providing the right information to visitors the KVC staff keep up-to-date on local road conditions (both in the East Kimberley and the Northern Territory) by regularly reviewing road reports. We also sell National Park passes and Greyhound bus tickets. The KVC provides access to "after-hours" information, maps and 24hr data touch screen and can provide written fact sheets and material in French and German as well as access to both French and German speaking locals who volunteer to translate for us (if required). We also have on display a wide range of maps, postcards, souvenirs and books including the sale of various local products including hand-made soaps, honey, chutneys, pickles, jams, cards, photographs and books.
Facilities
The KVC is centrally located adjacent to both the post office and our local Shire office. The KVC is co-located with the Telecentre, El Questro Wilderness Park Booking Office and Kimberley Asian Cuisine. The premises provide a safe, friendly shop facility that caters to those with disabled or special needs. There is a ramp available at the entrance to the building and clean, public toilets, including a disabled toilet. The KVC is easily recognisable as we have a large windmill at the front of the building with the italic ‘i' signage on it and we advise people to "look for the windmill" as a specific landmark when coming to the Visitor Centre - it is hard to miss!
